Yokozuna Oonosato participated in the Nishonoseki Ichimon rengo-keiko held
at Sadogatake beya in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture on the 7th. In the
face to face moshiai training session, he went 16-4 against Ozeki
Kotozakura . He continued his preparations for the Aki Basho. In his first
bout, he was forced out after a long yotsu session, but then he won six
consecutive bouts. He also showed some powerful pushing sumo. "I wasn't
good at first, but I was able to correct it. There were some good parts,"
he reflected. Regarding doing 20 consecutive bouts, he showed a satisfied
expression, saying, "I was thinking of going as far as I could today. I
think it wasn't bad." At the YDC soken held on the 2nd, he had a total of
15 bouts against Kotozakura, Ozeki Kirishima, and Sekiwake Atamifuji, going
10-5. On this day, he explained, "I focused on my lower body. It was all
over the place during the soken." He went 9-6 at the Nagoya tournament. It
wasn't the result he wanted, but the fact that he competed for 15 days
without taking a break will carry over to the Autumn tournament. "I've
figured out what kind of stamina I need to fight for 15 days. I think it's
just a matter of small things now, so I want to concentrate and do my
best," he said, showing his determination. He has won the Aki Basho for two
consecutive years, but has been far from winning a yusho since September of
last year. He has been in poor form, including missing the entire May
tournament due to a left shoulder injury, but he confessed, "It's been a
while since I've been in Tokyo, and I really want to win the yusho again."
He expressed his hope, "If I take each day seriously and do my best, I
think something will happen." [Daiki Iioka]
