Ozeki Kirishima, who will be challenging for promotion to Yokozuna at the
Aki basho, officially began his training on the 2nd at his heya in Sumida
Ward, Tokyo. He adjusted his training with basic exercises such as shiko ,
suriashi, and teppo . He also did training using an 11-kilogram bat, wiping
away sweat with satisfaction, saying, "It was a good workout. I was
training during the jungyo as well." The day before, on the 1st, he met
with Chairman Hakkaku  at an association event, who encouraged him, saying,
"You had a lot of forward-moving sumo in the last basho. Opportunities like
this don't come around often." He has shown remarkable consistency with 12
wins in three consecutive tournaments. Going for his third tsunatori basho,
he intends to go for degeiko from the 3rd, and showed his fighting spirit,
saying, "I have to keep training and raise my spirits. Training doesn't
lie."
