Umeta Kobayashi (19, Nishonoseki beya), a graduate of Tottori Johoku High
School, will take the new recruit examination for the Aki Basho on the 4th.
Kobayashi served as the captain of the team in last year's Inter-High
School Championships team competition and contributed to their victory.
After graduating, he strengthened his lower body and other areas at his
alma mater and joined Nishonoseki beya in August. During the summer, he
mainly trained by facing Sandanme rikishi. The 19-year-old, who has an
impressive physique at 1.86 meters tall and weighs 165 kilograms, said
excitedly, "I've gotten quite used to life at the heya. I can't wait to
make my debut." He is from Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The
Kumamoto earthquake on July 28th hit a magnitude 6.00 tremor, and
approximately 16,000 buildings were damaged, the most in any municipality.
"My family home was fine, but the water supply was cut off. It was shocking
to see images of local symbolic cultural properties being destroyed."
Although he hasn't returned to Kumamoto for the holidays, his feelings for
his hometown, where he spent his middle school years, have grown stronger.
He vowed, "I hope to achieve success quickly and give courage and energy to
my hometown."

◇ Kobayashi Umeta: Born May 6, 2007 (Heisei 19), a 19-year-old from
Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. He started sumo in the second grade
of elementary school at the Yachiwa Club. After graduating from middle
school, he studied sumo at Tottori Johoku High School. In his third year,
he contributed to the team's victory in the Inter-High School Championships
and the National Sports Festival as the team captain. 1.86 meters tall, 165
kg. His specialties are migi yotsu  and yori. His family consists of his
parents, older brother, and younger sister. Blood type O. His hobby is
listening to music (hip-hop).
