The Kyokai announced today that Izutsu Oyakata (former Makuuchi Akiseyama)
had retired effective the same day. He competed in the ring as Akiseyama
and retired from active competition at the end of the 2023 Aki Basho. He
inherited the name of elder "Izutsu" and after retirement, he served as an
elder attached to Kise beya, guiding younger rikishi. On July 18th, when he
turned 41, he said he wanted to "revitalize the heya." He is from Kasugai
City, Aichi Prefecture, and his real name is Mitsuhiko Fukao. After
attending Saitama Sakae High School and Nihon University, he joined Kise
beya and made his professional sumo debut in the 2008 January Basho. He was
promoted to Juryo in the 2010 Kyushu basho and to Makuuchi in the 2016 Haru
basho. His highest rank was East Maegashira 12. He spent four tournaments
in Makuuchi,  and had a career record of 472 wins, 473 losses, and 29
absences.
