The summer jungyo took place in Kofu City on the 4th, and Juryo Ryuuden
(35, Takadagawa) fought hard in his hometown. In asageiko, he had seven
consecutive bouts against Hakunofuji, Kotoeihou and others, winning six in
a row, including a powerful yorikiri. He was greeted with loud cheers from
his hometown crowd and said with determination, "So many people have come
to watch. I want to live up to their expectations." In the last basho, his
younger heyamate Shounannoumi  won the Juryo yusho. Ryuuden himself only
managed four wins, so he said with enthusiasm, "I want to win the Juryo
yusho without losing much and return to Makuuchi." Looking ahead to the
Autumn tournament where he will aim for a comeback, he said, "I will focus
on my lower body. I want to study my own sumo style and be able to put
myself in a position where I can generate power at any time." The
35-year-old former Komusubi has reached his 20th anniversary since his
debut in sumo. His Oyakata Takadagawa encouraged him, saying, "He has the
strength, but he hasn't been able to show it in real time..  He needs to
properly train his mental strength and his brain. He has to do his best
because the fans are cheering him on like this."
