Ahead of Aki Basho), new Juryo Tokifudou (Tokitsukaze) made a vow on the
8th, the first time in 30 years that three 8s have appeared in the year
(Reiwa), month, and day. Tokifudou, who changed his shikona from Yoshii
before Natsu and secured his promotion to Juryo with a kachikoshi last
basho where he was ranked West Makushita 2, said, "You never know until
you've competed in all 15 days, but I want to aim for a perfect record and
a yusho." He renewed his resolve on this auspicious day with the number
eight appearing in auspicious numbers. A former junior high school
yokozuna, he entered the sumo world immediately after graduating from

After his promotion was decided on July 29th, he received many messages
from people in his hometown of Shizuoka and elsewhere. The hard-working
rikishi happily exclaimed, "It was hard to keep up with replying to all the
LINE messages." On his 23rd birthday on the 1st, he smiled and said, "It
was a great birthday, as many people celebrated both my promotion and my
birthday." Today, he faced Makushita rikishi like Fudouhou at the heya in
Sumida Ward, Tokyo, and won 10 straight matches, for a total of 13 bouts
(12 wins and 1 loss). "Sekitori of the same age as me, such as Hakunofuji,
Kotoeihou, and Wakanoshou, are doing well, so I want to make my way into
the top ranks as well," he said enthusiastically. The rising star envisions

◆ Tokifudou Kou Real name: Yoshii Kou. Born August 1, 2003, in Yaizu City,
Shizuoka Prefecture. He became a junior high school yokozuna at Yaizu Port
Junior High School, joined Nakagawa beya (folded in 2020 after allegations
against the Oyakata)

name comes from the song "Niji" by Masaharu Fukuyama. His specialties are
