ex- Tenkaihou, now known as Minami Takayuki (41), explained the role of a
gyoji on his YouTube channel, "Minami's Gotchan Channel." Minami stated,
"Sumo isn't just done by active rikishi. There's a lot of work going on
around them, from the gyoji and yobidashi to the tokoyama." He then
explained, "The gyoji is the one who judges who wins and loses on the
dohyo. They're the ones who get the closest look and raise the fan to
declare the winner." He also mentioned the gyoji's work outside the dohyo.
"The gyoji writes the characters on the banzuke. It's called 'sumo
calligraphy.' They write thick, dense characters with as little space as
possible, which is unique to sumo," he explained. He also shared a fun
fact: "When rikishi have their retirement ceremony or wedding, the gyoji
writes all the invitations. These events can't run without the gyoji.
They're incredibly skilled at addressing envelopes and have amazing
handwriting. If a gyoji has just joined the sumo world, they practice
calligraphy at the Ryogoku Kokugikan (sumo arena)."
