Subject: [Sumo news] - Yokozuna Oonosato at the Jungyo
To: Sumo Newsletter2 <sumo-newsletter2 at googlegroups.com>
The Natsu Jungyo arrived took place at Kofu City today. Yokozuna Oonosato
is aiming for a full comeback at the Aki Basho (starting September 13th at
Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo). He has won the Aki Basho for two consecutive
years since his promotion to Makuuchi in 2024, and he said with
determination, "I want to do serious keiko again and manage my physical
condition. I want to get my body in shape and do my best to be ready for
the first day in September."After missing two consecutive tournaments due
to a left shoulder injury, he returned to the Nagoya Basho in July, but
suffered consecutive losses from the first day, ending with a record of 6
wins and 6 losses by the 12th day. He was in danger of becoming only the
third rikishi in history to have a "real" makekoshi after appearing in all
15 bouts since the establishment of the 15-day tournament in 1949,
following Oonokuni in the autumn of 1989 and 3rd generation Wakanohana in
the autumn of 1999 (both with 7 wins and 8 losses).
However, he said, "I never considered going kyujo. My sumo wasn't bad, and
I thought that everything is an experience." He said he didn't discuss the
possibility of withdrawing from the tournament with his Oyakata
Nishonoseki. He finished with a 9-6 record, including three consecutive
wins, including a dominant victory over hiramaku Takerufuji who was in
contention for the yusho from the 13th day. He gave a glimpse of his
comeback. "It's been a long time since I was able to complete a tournament,
as I did not take part in the spring and summer tournaments. The cheers
from the spectators gave me a lot of strength," he said, expressing his
deep gratitude.
Today, he did not do any sumo, but instead did the fundamentals. He
withdrew from the spring jungyo in April due to a left shoulder injury, and
he is determined to "train hard and complete the summer jungyo." Yokozuna
Houshouryuu (Tatsunami) is absent, leaving him as the sole Yokozuna.
Nevertheless, he expressed his determination, saying, "I want to do my best
without worrying about it." (Yamada Yutaka)
