At the health checkup held at Ryogoku Kokugikan in August, rikishi born in
the Showa era lined up, waiting to have their blood drawn. Among them were
Tamawashi, the oldest sekitori at 41, and Sadanoumi, at 39. Even in the
world of sumo, where strict hierarchy exists, these veterans were properly
waiting in line. Although it is said that rikishi from lower divisions
sometimes let others go first, Tamawashi said, "I don't like it when people
are considerate of me," and proceeded to chat with younger rikishi as he
walked along. We also spoke to Sadanoumi. What would he do if someone said,
"Please go ahead"? He replied without hesitation, "I would refuse."
Sadanoumi continued, "Because..." "When I was still a new recruit, Ozeki
Musouyama (Fujishima Oyakata) was in line." At that time, Sadanoumi said,
"Please go ahead." He still remembers the words that came back to him: "
I'm waiting in line already, so.." said Musouyama. Sadanoumi's achievements
are well known. He spent 60 bashos in Makuuchi and 24 bashos in Juryo at
the Aki Basho. Even at 39 years old, his spirit remains undiminished, and
his dedication to sumo has earned him the respect of those around him.
Despite his position, Sadanoumi quietly waited his turn, saying, "Ozeki
Musouyama said he would stay in line, so who am I to act differently?" The
youthfulness that Tamawashi and Sadanoumi have in common is also in their
spirit and way of thinking. This is probably a major reason why the two
have been able to perform well even as they have aged. (Takashi Kishimoto,
