The Jungyo took place today at the Ishikawa General Sports Center in
Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, marking the triumphant return to his
home prefecture of Yokozuna Oonosato, a native of Tsubata Town, who secured
his sixth yusho at the Aki Basho. Ishikawa, a region with a rich sumo
tradition, was abuzz with excitement over the local hero's comeback yusho,
his first in a year. Doors opened at 8:30 a.m., thirty minutes earlier than
usual, drawing a massive crowd of 5,900 spectators. "People called out
'Congratulations' to me. Local support gives me the most strength, so it
really means a lot," Oonosato said. When he appeared beside the dohyo at
9:34 a.m., the arena erupted in thunderous applause. During the public
keiko session, he did not engage in actual bouts; instead, he stepped on
the dohyo to perform light shiko and then carefully stretched in the
hanamichi. For the concluding butsukari-geiko he lent his chest to
Fujiryouga and Ozeki Kirishima and also charged at Kirishima himself.
After the public keiko ended, he participated in a session with children.
"I couldn't return in a positive state after the Komatsu tour in April," he
reflected. "My results weren't there, and I had mixed feelings. It feels
great to come back after finally winning a tournament." Another Jungyo
event is scheduled for the 13th in Kahoku City, which neighbors his
hometown of Tsubata. "There are still two weeks left in the Jungyo, so I
want to prepare thoroughly. I’ve received support over the past 15 days,
and I’m determined to keep working hard so I can share more good news going
forward," he said, expressing his gratitude.
