Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture today, marking the return of Yokozuna
Houshouryuu , who had sat out the entire Autumn Tournament. He conditioned
his body through basic exercises - shiko and suriashi , remarking simply,
"I just did what I needed to do." During butsugari geiko , he offered his
chest to Yokozuna Oonosato and engaged in the drills himself, working up a
sweat. He had been absent since the jungyo began in Tsukuba City on the 6th
due to an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee. As he
performed the dohyo-iri, he was met with loud cheers and thunderous
applause; smiling warmly, he said, "It brings back memories. I’m grateful
for the warm welcome and for the fact that people waited for my return." He
had aggravated the right knee injury during the Nagoya Tournament and
underwent surgery on the area in late July. The Autumn Tournament marked
his third consecutive absence from a tournament. Although he noted that he
had lost 15 kilograms, he reportedly has since regained weight, bringing
him back to nearly 150 kilograms.

Another popular rikishi in Matsumoto today was Mitakeumi, a native of
Agematsu Town, Nagano. He helped energize the local jungyo stop by, for
instance, acting as a practice partner for children. The cheers were
particularly loud; visibly moved, he remarked, "It’s intense. I could
really feel the heat of the crowd. 'Hang in there' was the most common
phrase I heard, and that atmosphere really gives me a push." Regarding the
upcoming Kyushu Tournament , the former Ozeki, who struggled in the
previous tournament with a 5–10 record while ranked at Juryo 4W, expressed
his determination to return to Makuuchi : "I want to secure double-digit
wins and, even if it’s a slow process, climb back up the ranks. I want to
make this the tournament that caps off the year on a high note." He also
sent a message to his fans: "I’m sure I’ll keep you on the edge of your
seats, but I hope for your continued, long-term support. To earn that, I’m
going to do my best to live up to everyone’s expectations."
