Takadagawa, the jungyo director, announced today that Yokozuna Houshouryuu
will join the Aki Jungyo starting with the event held in Matsumoto City,
Nagano Prefecture on the 10th. He underwent surgery on his right knee in
late July and missed the entire September Basho. He has been absent for
three consecutive tournaments and is carefully making adjustments. In
addition, Komusubi Hakunofuji left the tour on the 9th. Director Takadagawa
explained, "I heard he was experiencing discomfort in his Achilles tendon.
I told him it would be better for him to return to Tokyo and recover rather
than continue to participate half-hreatedly through the Jungyo."
The Jungyo arrived at Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, today.
Yoshinofuji, who is expected to return to the sanyaku ranks at the Kyushu
Tournament, engaged in sumo keiko, recording four wins and three losses
against opponents including Fujinokawa. Hailing from Uto City, Kumamoto
Prefecture, he saw his family home declared a total loss following the
earthquake in late July; he expressed his determination to "win and bring
joy" to people ahead of the tournament in his home region. Although he
struggled initially at the Aki Basho, competing as Maegashira 2W and
losing his first five bouts, he staged a comeback with six consecutive wins
starting on Day 10, ultimately finishing with a 9–6 kachikoshi. The
promising 25-year-old showed great spirit, stating, "Winning consistently
is the most important thing. The support in Kyushu is amazing, too. I’m
going to go full throttle right from Day 1."
Meanwhile, 33-year-old Churanoumi has all but secured promotion to sanyaku
for the Kyushu Tournament, a feat that would make him the first rikishi
from Okinawa Prefecture to achieve this status. On the 4th of this month,
he returned to his hometown of Uruma City to promote the winter Jungyo
event scheduled there for December 19 and 20. "I’m not particularly fixated
on my rank, but it makes me happy to see the people around me so pleased,"
he said with a bashful smile.
