Sekiwake Atamifuji participated in moshiai (winner-stays-on) keiko for the
first time during the current Jungyo, facing off against other sekitori. He
received advice regarding his tachiai from Jungyo Director Takadagawa.
During the sparring session, Atamifuji was called over by Director
Takadagawa, who was watching from ringside. He listened intently as the
director offered advice accompanied by expressive hand gestures. Director
Takadagawa explained, "He wasn't planting his hands firmly at the tachiai.
Planting them firmly allows his weight and power to be transmitted
effectively; if he just taps them lightly, he becomes lighter and loses the
benefit of his natural build." He added, "I told him he should make a habit
of planting his hands firmly during keiko, it will help him rise through
the ranks faster," expressing his high hopes for the rikishi. Since his
debut in the Sanyaku ranks at the March tournament this year, Atamifuji has
steadily accumulated wins, recording 9, 9, and 12 victories respectively
across the subsequent tournaments. Heading into the Autumn tournament,
expectations were high that he would secure 12 wins, bringing his total
over three Sanyaku tournaments to 33, a benchmark for promotion to Ozeki,
but a five-bout losing streak late in the tournament hampered his progress,
and he finished with a record of 8 wins and 7 losses.
