Subject: [Sumo news] - An occurrence in Makushita
To: Sumo Newsletter2 <sumo-newsletter2 at googlegroups.com>
On day 11, a fierce battle unfolded, and an incident occurred during a bout
in Makushita that created a tense atmosphere in the arena. As the two
rikishi locked in a tight grapple and engaged in a fierce exchange of
blows, the gyoji suddenly stopped the match. Voices of "Don't move!" echoed
from the dohyo, and the match was called off for about 40 seconds. The
incident in question occurred in the match between Makushita 32 Daimasakari
and Makushita 28 Ryuuhou . After the match resumed following the referee's
"wait" on the mawashi, Daimasakarii defeated Ryuuhou with a shitatenage to
secure his fifth win. At the tachiai, both rikishi clashed headfirst with
great force, immediately locking into a tight grapple. The two rikishi
locked chests, applying pressure to each other in a tense exchange that
lasted for nearly a minute. However, in the midst of the fierce battle, an
accident occurred: the knot in Ryuuhou's mawashi began to come undone.
Noticing this, the referee, Kimura Satoshi, quickly stepped between the two
wrestlers and temporarily suspended the match. According to the rules of
sumo, if a mawashi becomes loose or comes undone during a match, the gyoji
will temporarily suspend the match and re-tighten it while the rikishi are
still in that position, a rule called "mawashi matta" . Kimura Satoshi
moved behind the two rikishi, who were still locked in a tight hold, and
desperately tried to re-tighten the mawashi, but dealing with the loosened
mawashi proved difficult. He repeatedly shouted, "Don't move, don't move!",
and tension filled the arena. After a tense exchange that lasted for about
40 seconds, the re-tightening was finally completed. With a signal from
Kimura Satoshi, he slapped both rikishi and announced, "Nokotta!" (Still
going!), and the match resumed. Immediately after the restart, Daimasakari
unleashed a sharp shitatenage, causing both rikishi to tumble to the dohyo.
The gyoji initially awarded the victory to Daimasakari, but the saga did
not end here - a monoii was called, to see if it was maybe too close to
call, leading to a shinpan deliberation. It was subsequently confirmed that
Ryuuhou's arm had touched down on the clay first, so the gyoji's decision
was upheld by the shinpan. Viewers reacted to this with comments such as
"He's having a hard time," "Don't move!", "Wait for the mawashi!", and
"This is Satoshi's chance to show off his skills!", creating a great deal
of excitement over the unusual incident. Daimasakari, who won the
nail-biting match, is now 5-1 while Ryuuhou suffered his second defeat.
