The jungyo took place in Nagareyama, Chiba Prefecture today. Tour director
Takadagawa spoke to reporters and suggested that air conditioning
facilities may be taken into consideration when selecting venues for next
summer and beyond. This summer, several venues lacked air conditioning, and
he revealed, "We can no longer hold events in places without air
conditioning in the summer. We are considering it (for next year and
beyond)." At the tour held in Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture on the 8th, there
was no air conditioning around the dohyo or in the shitakubeya. At the tour
held in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture on the 24th, there was no air
conditioning in the shitakubeya used by all the rikishi, so rikishi of
Ozeki and above were hastily moved to a cooler room. Takadagawa, who was
transferred from the judging department after this year's spring
tournament, is working on reforms for next summer and beyond. Although the
schedule has already been decided until the spring jungyo after next year's
spring tournament, the organizers explained, "We will reduce the number of
dates starting from next summer. We will reduce the number of days from 90
days (per year) to around 70 days. In order to reduce the physical burden
on the rikishi, we will have them stay in the same place if it is nearby,
and we will include two-day or three-day events. We will also avoid making
them travel unnecessarily." They are moving in the direction of reducing
the burden on the rikishi by adjusting the schedule and environment.
