Yokozuna Houshouryuu had 19 bouts . He particularly thrilled the crowd by facing fellow Yokozuna Oonosato for a final series of sanban-geiko. With Chairman Hakkaku watching from dohyo-side, Houshouryuu, who had undergone right-knee surgery in late July and sat out the entire Autumn Tournament, showed renewed intensity. In their very first encounter, he drove Oonosato upward and pushed him out of the dohyo. During the final sanban-geiko session against Oonosato, however, Houshouryuu's performance dipped in the latter half, leaving him with a record of 6 wins and 8 losses across their encounters that day. On the 14th, in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Houshouryuu had resumed doing sumo, having 7 wins against 3 losses against Oonosato. Reflecting on this second session since rejoining the tour, he nodded and remarked, "My hips are low, and my feet are moving forward. I was worried, but I was actually able to wrestle quite well—better than I expected." On the other hand, the fact that he suffered more losses than wins in the latter half highlighted a clear area for improvement: "I need to regain my physical strength." Chairman Hakkaku commented, "Houshouryuu is still in the rehabilitation phase. I told him to get plenty of bouts in; he won't regain his 'heaviness' [power and stability] without putting in the repetitions. If he intends to compete in the next tournament, he has to get the volume of training in." Houshouryuu acknowledged this, stating, "As the Chairman says, I need to increase the number of bouts ." His Oyakata Tatsunami also emphasized that there is still much work to be done. Houshouryuu will continue to accumulate bouts throughout the remainder of the Jungyo, aiming for a return to competition at the Kyushu Basho.</span>
