This result makes a promotion to Ozeki following the current tournament unlikely. Although Atamifuji won the tachiai, he allowed Oonosato to get an under-arm grip on his right side and was subsequently thrown down via shitatedashinage. Before the bout, Kyokai Chairman Hakkaku had noted, "If Atamifuji wants to make a case [for promotion], he needs to win with a strong performance," but he was unable to secure the victory. The benchmark for Ozeki promotion is a total of 33 wins over the most recent three tournaments while ranked in sanyaku. Atamifuji, who had accumulated 9 wins and 12 wins since his debut at the Sekiwake rank, needed to win all four of his remaining bouts to reach that benchmark, but this loss put that goal out of reach. Chief Judge Kokonoe avoided a definitive statement, saying, "It’s not up to me to decide. If he hits that number or shows performance worthy of it, then the conversation [about promotion] will happen. I’ll speak when the time comes. Right now, he’s working hard. Winning all the remaining bouts is also important."</span>
