While still in Juryo, Kiryuukou underwent surgery for a serious injury during Haru basho, a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He has been on an extended break since then. Regarding the current condition of his right knee, he said, "There are good and bad days. When I'm feeling good, I can walk normally, but on bad days, I sometimes drag my foot a little when I walk." He has already been donning a mawashi and going down to the keiko ba since around June, saying, "I've only been doing basic exercises like shiko and suriashi. There's no point in rushing and I want to get better." His return could be as early as the Kyushu basho in November or the Hatsu basho in January next year. He said he's been watching live broadcasts of sumo during his absence, saying, "When I see everyone wrestling in honbasho, it makes me want to get back as soon as possible."</span>
