Wrestlers — <span style="font-family: Helvetica-Oblique; font-style: italic;">rikishi </span>— are typically scouted at about the age of 15 (though they can start training from as young as 3), when they enter the <span style="font-family: Helvetica-Oblique; font-style: italic;">beya</span>, the dedicated sumo stables where athletes live and train. The sport is proudly Japanese, though competitors also come from other countries with wrestling traditions, such as Mongolia and Georgia; each <span style="font-family: Helvetica-Oblique; font-style: italic;">beya </span>can admit only one foreign fighter. Few outsiders are granted access to this secretive world but David Sharabani, an award-winning photographer who styles himself as Lord K2, spent a year behind the scenes capturing the <span style="font-family: Helvetica-Oblique; font-style: italic;">rikishi </span>training hard and competing in tournaments in front of thousands of clamouring fans.
