Regarding Houshouryuu, who sat out the entire Aki Basho, Tatsunami Oyakata
confirmed on the 20th that the Yokozuna will compete in the upcoming Kyushu
Tournament. "He has already joined the current Jungyo, and he will make his
comeback at the Kyushu tournament," the Oyakata stated. Houshouryuu
aggravated an old injury to his right knee during the Nagoya Tournament and
underwent surgery in late July. The Autumn Tournament marked his third
consecutive kyujo. Since his promotion to the rank of Yokozuna, he has now
gone 10 tournaments without a yusho, a figure surpassed only by Asashio,
Kashiwado, and Wakanohana III (who each had 11-tournament droughts) since
the current six-tournament-per-year system was established in 1958.
Houshouryuu joined the ongoing Aki Jungyo on the 10th in Matsumoto City
(Nagano Prefecture) and is continuing his preparations in pursuit of his
first yusho as a Yokozuna.
Meanwhile, it was announced that a "Spring Jungyo" event will be held on
April 15 of next year at the Ariake Arena in Koto Ward, Tokyo. Visiting the
Koto Ward Office, Tatsunami Oyakata remarked, "I believe this is the first
time an event of this scale, accommodating 15,000 spectators, has been
held. It’s quite a significant undertaking, and I’m looking forward to it."
Houshouryuu is also scheduled to participate, with the Oyakata expressing
his hope: "I’d like to think he’ll have won a yusho by then."
