"Chanko Kokonoe", a restaurant serving dishes based on recipes directly
from Kokonoe beya opened on the 16th in the Sakae district of Nagoya.
Kokonoe Oyakata , who won a yusho at the Nagoya tournament during his
active career, presented his signature shio (salt-based) *chanko* hot pot
and remarked, "I am delighted to be able to share a flavor that has been
preserved for over 50 years. I hope many people will come to visit." The
idea for the restaurant came from Takateru Kawano, president of the major
rental conference room company TKP—a fellow Oita Prefecture native and a
friend of over a decade, who suggested the venture the day after the
final-day party of the Nagoya tournament. Kokonoe Oyakata accepted
immediately, and the project—a renovation of a Japanese restaurant already
operated by TKP, was brought to fruition in just about three months. This
is believed to be the first instance of a chanko* restaurant bearing the
name of an actual sumo heya . The interior features displays of tegata and
banzuke, with the owner expressing a hope that the space will also serve as
a venue for interaction between rikishi and their fans.
