Hey everyone,

This past weekend saw the debut of Sumo Championship League. They held
their first event in Austin, TX and streamed the whole thing live on
YouTube. Here’s that stream if you missed it:
<https://substack.com/redirect/c21f4545-dfdc-4020-9996-6384a498f6cb?j=eyJ1IjoiMzRya2FmIn0.mqIahmYQP5uuDHgaPbSRAIInM5kVcoCIz74UwCcJSC0>

I recapped the results from this event over on Combat Press. You can read
those here (LINK
<https://substack.com/redirect/fd92c31d-24c3-482e-82f5-acb476482f47?j=eyJ1IjoiMzRya2FmIn0.mqIahmYQP5uuDHgaPbSRAIInM5kVcoCIz74UwCcJSC0>
).

I don’t want to rehash the results in this post. Instead, I want to share
my impressions of the event.

Overall, I came away with a very positive impression of SCL and what they
are trying to do. And I’m looking forward to watching the next event, which
happens in Chicago on November 7.

Here are some of my thoughts on specific aspects of the show.
Quality of Sumo

I was very happy with the sumo on display at this event. It wasn’t what we
see in Grand Sumo, but it was still entertaining and featured some really
skilled and passionate guys giving it their all.

The expectation for amateur sumo should never be the same as what we expect
from Grand Sumo. These folks are doing this out of love for the sport and
the community around it. They are also living lives around this pastime.
They love sumo, but they don’t live and breathe it like the guys do in
their stables in Japan. And the wrestlers in SCL aren’t relying on this as
their only source of income. Also, their entire identities aren’t woven
into the sport like it is in Japan.

For these reasons, we’re never going to see the intense and, frankly,
violent sumo that we enjoy out of Japan. The intensity/violence in Grand
Sumo is also what breeds the high level of technique, since it puts
pressure on everyone to become capable so that they can avoid being hurt
and, of course, defeated.

So, for what it is, I think SCL really delivered on its premise of
showcasing competition that had clear roots in traditional sumo while also
embracing the more friendly vibe of *amazumo* (amateur sumo).

Within that context, there were still some pretty intense and volatile
matches. And the skill level was among the highest I’ve seen in an amateur
competition.

The two most skilled wrestlers in the field ended up fighting for the
title; Jordan Sikes and Edobor Konyeha. Both of them showed really clean
technique, especially with *yotsu-zumo *(belt-grappling).

I was really impressed with Sikes’ grappling in his semifinal bouts with
the 450-lbs Dominus Davis-Williams. He showed a lot of intelligence in
attacking the belt and leveraging that to beat the biggest man in the
tournament (who was also the number one seed). Sikes also has great size
and a lot of upside. He’s only 21 years old.

Konyeha’s performance was of no surprise to me. I’ve been impressed by him
for a while now. He’s a wizard. His creativity, spontaneity, athleticism
and agility are all top level on the amateur scene. If he found his way to
a stable as a kid and put on the weight, he could easily have been a
success in Grand Sumo. He was second best at this event, due to Sikes’ size
and strength advantage, but I’m looking forward to these two meeting again
in SCL competition.

I also enjoyed George Ferris’ efforts. He brought a lot of intensity to his
matches and I think that was a nice contrast to the kumbaya vibes many
other competitors were giving off (and I don’t think there’s anything wrong
with being friendly in these competitions). Ferris’ aggression and
commitment deserves some praise, though. In that kind of atmosphere, it can
be hard to pull that out of yourself. I hope he brings that same kind of
fire in the next tournament, even if we won’t have the same chip on his
shoulder (from being seeded so low).

I also liked watching Davis-Williams. His size is tremendous, though —
unlike in Grand Sumo — the size didn’t come along with punishing daily
routines designed to make sure there is immense muscle under an armour of
fat. Still, I thought he moved really quickly for someone his size. And I
liked his persona, too. He wasn’t intense like Ferris. Instead he had a
joyous energy that felt both authentic and contagious.

There were lots of other impressive performances on the night. Jared Parham
had some great wins, including a cool *tsuridashi *(frontal life out). I
really enjoyed Samuel Rodriguez III, too. He only went 1-2, but he really
threw himself into his bouts with a lot of energy and desire. His chaotic
style reminded me a bit of Tobizaru.
Competition Format

I think this format really works. I liked the opening pool bouts followed
by elimination matches. And I love best of three sumo and was happy to see
that in the semifinals and final.

The one-night tournament, with lots of opportunities for guys to get wins,
really helped a narrative take shape over the course of the event. In Grand
Sumo we see our narratives play out over fifteen days, so there’s lots of
time for them to take shape. This event’s format was really suited to
quickly creating a fun one-night only narrative with various characters
emerging as contenders. That helped me, and the friends I was watching this
with, get excited over the potential match-ups as the tournament progressed.

In this particular tournament, it felt like Konyeha was a shoo-in to get in
the final. But there was some drama about whether it would be Sikes or
Davis-Williams who would join him. No disrespect to Davis-Williams, but I
was personally thrilled when the collision course between Sikes and Konyeha
came to fruition.

I also really love how there are prizes on offer at these individual
tournaments and that there is a league standing, with play-offs down the
line. $10,000 is a lot of money for amateur sumo and Sikes seemed over the
moon at his winnings. The grand prize, available at the play-offs, is
$100,000. That’s potentially life changing for whomever ends up winning
this. These stakes really help the promotion and competition feel important
and legitimate.
Presentation

Overall, I think the presentation of this event was a hit. But I think
there is room for improvement.

The *dohyo* looked spectacular. I love how it combined a traditional
aesthetic with a modern/sensible concern for athlete safety (please take
note JSA). I thought the lighting was impeccable. We can probably thank
founder Stu Snyder for that. He comes from WWE, Broadway and Disney on Ice.
His expertise in live production really helped this event feel professional
and progressive.

I think the announcer, commentators and ringside reporter all did a good
job, too. There were some flubs along the way, but it’s the first show — I
can forgive that. I think everyone did a good job in both showing reverence
for the sport and celebrating the athletes.

I liked the graphics and the presentations that showed us the tournament
brackets. It all looked very slick.

I hated the use of AI in the teaser trailer, which was over-played during
intermissions. I have a feeling that was put together simply because they
didn’t have any past shows to draw content from. If that’s the case, then
we might not see it ever again. If the event continues to use AI after
this, that would be very disappointing.

Another minor criticism I have is that there wasn’t much going on when it
came to music. I think some kind of hype music between bouts to encourage
fans clapping or cheering, the way we see between at-bats in baseball or
between timeouts in basketball, could have helped liven up the crowd a
little bit.

The crowd was loud from the semifinals onward. I think that was because
they were getting drawn into the narratives at play. But before that, I
think people in the audience were caught between wondering if this was a
cultural exchange or live sports. I also think they might have also been
under the impression that watching sumo is a demure pastime (due to common
tropes about Japan) and that getting rowdy would be bad form.

I think the challenge for SCL and other sumo orgs outside of Japan, is to
convince live audiences that they have permission to clap and yell and get
up off their seats. I think music, whether it’s classic ‘We Will Rock You’
kind of stuff, or some live drumming, could really intensify the atmosphere
at an event like this. And that, in turn, could also benefit the *sumo*
itself by helping these guys feel like superstars out there.
Conclusion

In short, I really enjoyed this show and I’m eager to both watch more of it
and write more about it here on *Sumo Stomp! *The athletes were great and
the production around them was to a high enough standard that it was easy
to accept that I was watching a pro sports competition and not something at
my local rec center. There is room to grow, for sure, but I think this was
a very strong start to the SCL and I hope they’ll have the funds and time
to grow from here.

If you watched this show, I’m very interested to hear your takeaways and
whether you’d be interested in watching more of it. Please let me know your
thoughts in the comments below.

In closing, here’s a bonus gif. It’s our big winner Jordan Sikes (we need
some nicknames for these guys, too, by the way).
