The annual NHK Welfare Grand Sumo Tournament was held on the 7th at the
Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.
Shounannoumi won the Juryo contest after a three-way same-heya playoff. He
beat Koutokuzan in the first round, then Kotoeihou in the second, then
Kyokukaiyuu in the third. He won the three-way Takadagawa beya playoffs by
beating Kagayaki (oshidashi) and Hakuyouzan (yorikiri).  Prize? 500,000
yen. "I really didn't want to lose this (playoffs).. I'm happy to be able
to make my Oyakata happy. I will seriously attempt to yusho next basho and
rise up in the ranks," he said. He loses to both of them in keiko a lot, it
is said.

The entertainment part:

 The "Fun Singing Competition" corner featured participation from Yamashina
Oyakata (ex-Toyohibiki), Komusubi Wakamotoharu, and Maegashira Hakunofuji,
Atamifuji, and Hiradoumi. Singers Kawanaka Miyuki
