Yokozuna Houshouryuu revealed that he had undergone surgery on his right
knee. On the 19th, he visited the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo for a health
checkup and explained his recovery since the Nagoya tournament. He is
currently not participating in keiko and it is unlikely that he will be
able to participate in Aki. He had a record of 7 wins and 6 losses up to
the 13th day of the Nagoya tournament. He withdrew from the tournament from
the 14th day and submitted a medical certificate to the Kyokai stating that
he had suffered a "right medial collateral ligament injury and a right
hamstring injury, requiring approximately 6 weeks of recovery." After the
final day of the tournament, he returned to Tokyo and visited a hospital in
Tokyo on July 27th. "I was told that it would take a year to recover if I
didn't have surgery. I didn't think it would be this bad," he recalled. He
underwent surgery to repair the ligament on the 29th and was hospitalized
for a week after the operation. He used crutches immediately after the
surgery, but is now "able to walk a lot more." He has gone down to the
keiko-ba and started training, and revealed that his doctor told him that
"he is recovering quickly." However, he remained cautious about the
upcoming Aki Basho, saying, "I'm not sure yet." He expressed his desire to
recover quickly, stating, "I can't face my fans. I want to recover as soon
