Having won his third yusho at the Nagoya basho and secured his return to
Ozeki, Aonishiki showed his awareness of his role as a top-ranked rikishi.
Despite having concerns about his left leg and other areas, he is
participating in the jungyo which began on the 2nd. "As an Ozeki, there are
people who can't easily come to the tournament. I hope that by interacting
with them, they will come to love sumo even more," he said with conviction.
On this day, he wore a tabi (traditional Japanese socks) on his left leg
and checked out his movements with suriashi and squats. "I'm facing my body
head-on and not rushing things. I'll take it little by little," he said,
carefully preparing for Aki basho.
The jungyo arrived in Sendai on the 10th, and Tokihayate, who is certain to
be repromoted to Makuuchi for Aki basho, fought hard in his hometown. He
had six bouts with same Ichimon member Ozeki Kirishima and others, and even
landed a spectacular uwatenage, saying, "Kirishima also challenged me
yesterday. I'm grateful to be challenged in my hometown." He is from
Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture, and also participated in a talk show. He
smiled and said, "I'm grateful. I'm happy," after receiving loud cheers and
applause. Last night he enjoyed the local specialty, beef tongue, to
recharge his energy.
